Chapter 20

Zoey

Deep, deep in the turbulent, clear waters of Twarvel Ocean, within glass walls fifty men thick, three water wielders walked. Their gait slow. Their breaths heavy. Sweat had dried on their backs, a testament to the arduous day that neared its end. Two of them hugged their bodies as the wind whirled through the tall grass and slammed into their damp tunics.

“It’s not natural wind,” said Kifi, though no one asked for an explanation. Zoey had just met the girl, but she had already gathered a few things from Kifi. One, she was poor. Her clothing and speech made that abundantly clear. The daughter of a pub waitress. A baker, perhaps. Second, she liked to talk. A lot. Even when it wasn’t asked of her, she would offer little tidbits of information on this and that. “Did you know that Ciramm Depths was once only one pyramid. But as the city grew, so did the need for more Pyramids. People have been speaking about another pyramid. The population is becoming so large, you see…” and another occasion, when Sophia had complained about the size of the holes on the Tiozhan wall being too small, Kifi had gone on about a certain famous Tiozhan duel. “Match of the Peasants, it’s come to be known as. On one side, we had the two established champions, Adonai the Relentless and Riton of the Sand Dunes. Six seasons they’d gone almost undefeated. And the only matches they did lose where against the legendary Sotris the Sharpshooter and Fleischman. With Adonai’s aggressive style and Riton’s ability to intercept the smallest of water spheres, they were near impossible to defeat. And out of nowhere, these two newcomers enter the tournament and won. Nobody knew who they were. But after the tournament of the Cloves everyone in Va’siel knew their names.” Her eyes sparkled as she spoke. “Blind Rogue Agathe. And Waterslinger of the Slums, Rris.” Her focus now seemed to be the weather of Ciramm Depths. “The winds are created by wind wielders, you see. Then, at a scheduled time, it’s released out into the city. Same thing goes for the rain and sunlight.”

“That’s all very interesting,” said Sophia through an exaggerated yawn. “Please, do tell us more.”

“Oh, I’m glad you’re interested. Most everyone else thinks I talk too much. So, where was I? Oh, yes. The weather. So, we get wielders from all across the planet here. Fire wielders for light and cooking. Earth wielders for all the farming. Water wielders for drinking, washing, and cooking. Can’t make a proper stew without some broth. Those rich folks up in the noble district get most of the clean water, but we get some down here, too. Not as clean, but it’s good all the same. Void wielders are the highest paid of all. Since they are so versatile and can fill in so many jobs. There are even some poison wielders here. They’re in charge of killing off any unwanted weeds. Dark wielders…”

Zoey smiled. All her life she’d thought of wielding as a weapon for battle.
